What is C.A.M.I. ?

C.A.M.I. (The Council for Anglophone Magdalen Islanders) is a community organization incorporated in March 1987 with the mandate "to promote and protect the rights of the Anglophone Magdalen Islanders and to encourage them to defend those rights in the following areas: language, social services, health, education, legal services, culture and preservation of heritage, while promoting the right to live in English.". Its main function is to administer its Historical Heritage Complex in Old Harry, which consists of the Little Red Schoolhouse and the Veterans Museum with its Memorial park. It also owns the museum on Entry Island and manages the Brion Island ecological reserve.

C.A.M.I. has done much over the last several years to fulfill its mandate. It sponsors and organizes the Canada Day Celebrations in the community. It hosts Geordie Productions, which allows a live English theatre troupe to visit Grosse Ile and Entry Island schools each year. It also coordinates an annual Remembrance Day Service taking place at the veterans’ museum with a wreath laying ceremony in the Memorial Park.

In addition it presents academic awards for English and French each year to elementary and secondary levels. And above all it helps to create numerous employment opportunities.

C.A.M.I.'s office is located in the upstairs of the former Little Red Schoolhouse in Old Harry, a village within the municipality of Grosse Ile. This schoolhouse which was built in 1921, served as a one-room schoolhouse for fifty-two years until 1973 when the students were transferred to the Grosse Ile School. C.A.M.I., wishing to preserve the heritage of our community decided to restore the school depicting its original purpose and it is now a museum.

Today, the upstairs serves as an office for C.A.M.I.'s affairs, and the main level, housing various collections, is open daily during the tourist season. The office of C.A.M.I. is situated approximately 52 kilometers from the main island of Cap-aux-Meules, looking down on the famous Old Harry Beach.
