Top 5: Charles-Édouard D’Astous has already replaced Darren Raddysh in Tampa

We were treated to 12 big hockey games last night, as 24 teams battled for crucial points in the standings.

The quarter-mark of the season is fast approaching, with all NHL teams set to play their 21st game of the season in just a few days.

Here are the highlights that caught our attention yesterday.

1. D’Astous Steps In for Raddysh in Fine Form

While the Montreal Canadiens and their fans set a decibel record at the Toronto Public Library, we were treated to a thrilling hockey game between two of the NHL’s best teams.

The Tampa Bay Lightning visited the Minnesota Wild, treating us to a spectacular show that the Lightning won 4–3 in overtime.

Tampa came back from a 1–3 deficit to tie the game on a power play and an empty-net goal by Charles-Édouard D’Astous, who fired off a superb one-timer.

The 28-year-old Quebec defenseman recorded a goal and two assists in this victory, bringing his total to 11 points—including three goals—in 15 games.

D’Astous is having an excellent season, playing on the Lightning’s first power play unit—quite an achievement for an undrafted defenseman.

This reminds us of a certain Darren Raddysh—who also went undrafted—who scored 22 goals and 70 points last season with Tampa.

He signed a big contract in Toronto, and while he’s already been replaced by D’Astous in Tampa, Raddysh is still looking for his first goal with the Leafs, having recorded just ten assists in 18 games.

In short, the Lightning made the right decision, and we wish D’Astous the best.

It’s worth noting that Nikita Kucherov scored the game-winning goal in overtime with a superb wrist shot.

2. Fierce fight between Moritz Seider and Gabriel Landeskog

The Colorado Avalanche handed the Detroit Red Wings their third straight loss last night, shutting them out 4–0.

There’s clearly some frustration among the Red Wings, as Moritz Seider went after Gabriel Landeskog in a furious fight between two players who aren’t used to dropping the gloves.

That was definitely a solid fight.

3. A wild game that ended with a refereeing controversy

After Wild vs. Lightning, here’s the other completely wild game of the day, as the New York Islanders hosted the New Jersey Devils.

There’s a rivalry between the two teams, and we saw it play out several times, especially when Matthew Schaefer and Luke Hughes came to blows late in the second period.

The Islanders were leading 4–2 at the time, but the Devils came back from behind and won 5–4 in overtime thanks to a goal by Jack Hughes—a goal that was, however, marred by controversy.

In fact, moments before the goal, Luke Hughes can be seen knocking down Matthew Schaefer, sending Jack Hughes on a 2-on-0 breakaway.

The referees didn’t call it; in fact, they didn’t award the Islanders a single power play throughout the entire game, while the Devils had four.

The crowd was furious, especially since the Devils won the game on that play.

In short, once again—just like in Toronto last night—the referees are causing chaos with some very poor calls.

It’s worth noting that in the loss, Victor Eklund—drafted with one of the picks acquired in the Noah Dobson trade—scored his fifth goal of the season, while Dobson still hasn’t found the back of the net this season.

Eklund, 20, has eight points in 16 games in his rookie season, which is the same number of points Dobson currently has this season in 17 games.

4. The Hurricanes Score Nine Goals Against the Blackhawks

Carolina is atop the NHL this season after winning the Stanley Cup last season.

They’re simply too strong right now, and they proved it last night against the hapless Chicago Blackhawks with a 9-2 home win.

What’s crazy is that only three Hurricanes players failed to record at least one point in that game, and no player had more than three points.

This really shows just how much the entire team contributes for the Hurricanes—it’s not just about one line.

It’s worth noting that Russian defenseman Alexander Nikishin was playing his first game of the season after recently requesting a trade, and he scored his first goal of the season and added an assist.

In the loss, Connor Bedard scored a spectacular goal off a rebound.

5. The Sharks’ #1 and #2 Line

Macklin Celebrini and Ivar Stenberg executed a beautiful play together last night in a 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars.

Stenberg has 11 points, including five goals, in 19 games.
